The phone speaker mix check.
Phone speakers reproduce roughly 550 Hz to 5 kHz, in mono, through the phone's own processing. Everything below that window is gone, not quieter. A mix that still has a kick, a bassline, a clear vocal and a hook on a phone speaker will survive anywhere. Check while you mix, not after.
Why does my mix sound bad on phone speakers?
Because the phone speaker is not a smaller version of your monitors. It is a different instrument that discards most of what you mixed. Three things happen at once:
The low end does not exist. A phone speaker driver is around the size of a fingernail, backed by no cabinet volume worth the name. It physically cannot move enough air to reproduce low frequencies. Below roughly 550 Hz the output falls off a cliff, and by the time you reach a sub or an 808's fundamental there is nothing left. Your low end is not "quiet" on the phone. It is absent.
Stereo is gone. At arm's length a phone is one small sound source. Width tricks, hard-panned parts, and anything that lives in the sides of the mix either collapses into the center or partially cancels. If a hook only works because it is wide, the phone plays the version without the trick.
The phone processes everything. Phones run their own limiting, protection and tuning in front of that tiny driver, and the driver itself compresses as it hits its limits. Your carefully staged dynamics arrive flattened. On top of that, quiet playback shifts human hearing toward the midrange (the equal-loudness effect), so the mids get judged twice as hard.
Why check on a phone speaker at all?
Because more people will hear your mix on a phone speaker than on anything you own, and it disagrees with your monitors about almost everything. The phone check is the fastest honest answer to the only question that matters: does the record survive the way people actually play it. Engineers have always done this. It used to be the car test. Today the car is in everyone's pocket.
The phone is also a merciless balance referee. With the low end and the width stripped away, all that remains is arrangement and balance: whether the kick reads, whether the vocal sits on top, whether the hook carries. If those survive the worst speaker, the mix's skeleton is right, and the full-range version is almost always right with it.
What should I listen for in a phone check?
Listen for survival, not beauty. The phone will never sound good. It can sound correct. Run down this list:
- Does the kick still exist? If the kick vanishes, it is living entirely below the phone's window. It needs a click, a knock, or midrange harmonics that poke into the audible band.
- Can you follow the bassline? A sine-pure sub disappears. Saturation and harmonics are how a bass part stays legible on small speakers.
- Is the lead vocal on top? The phone's mid-forward window is vocal territory. If the vocal is buried here, it is buried for most of your audience.
- Does the hook survive mono? Wide doubles, stereo synths and out-of-phase tricks can thin out or vanish. The hook has to work as a mono event.
- Does anything turn harsh? The 2 to 5 kHz region carries the phone's emphasis. Resonances and over-bright vocals that hid on your monitors will bite here first.
- Does the drop still land? With no sub to lean on, a drop has to land through arrangement: the pullback, the vocal, the rhythm. If it deflates, the impact was all low end.
- Is the low-mid buildup swallowing everything? The 200 to 600 Hz zone you stopped noticing on monitors becomes the floor of the whole mix on a phone.
Fix what failed back on the monitors, then check again. The loop is the point: decision, check, correction, while the session is still open.
